You can buy the brightest projector or the best OLED on the market, but if afternoon sun is bouncing off the screen or a thin line of daylight is leaking around the window frame, contrast collapses and the picture looks grey. The goal in this room isn't "darker" — it's total darkness on demand, then back to a normal, livable room when the credits roll. The tricky part most homeowners discover too late is that blackout fabric alone does not make a blackout room. Light is sneaky: it slips around the sides, over the top, and under the bottom of any blind hung the conventional way. Calgary adds its own wrinkles — intense high-altitude UV, low winter sun that sits right at screen height, and Chinooks that swing the room temperature in an afternoon. Edge light gaps are the real problem — not the fabric
Here's the honest truth nobody tells you: a "100% blackout" fabric only blocks light passing through the cloth. It does nothing about the gap between the blind and the wall. Hang a standard inside-mount roller and you'll get a glowing halo of daylight down both sides, a slot of light at the top where the roll sits, and a bright line at the sill. In a lit room you'd never notice; with a projector running you'll see every one of them. The fix is a side-channel (light-blocking track) system: aluminium U-channels screwed to the window jambs that the blind edges tuck into, plus a cassette headbox up top and a sill seal at the bottom. The fabric and the channels together form a continuous light trap. This is the single biggest difference between a room that's "pretty dark" and one that's true theatre-black. It's also why media-room blinds should be measured and installed by someone who's done it before — channel placement has a tolerance of a couple of millimetres.
Calgary light: UV, low winter sun, and glare at screen height
Calgary sits at altitude with a lot of clear-sky days, so UV exposure is genuinely high. A theatre room is the one place motorization earns its keep. You're usually reclined, the lights are already dimmed, and reaching up to a chain on three or four windows breaks the moment. Motorized blackout blinds let you set a "Movie" scene that closes every shade at once — and you can tie it into Alexa, Google Home, or a Matter-based smart home so it triggers alongside your lights and projector. Schedule them to drop at dusk, or close on a voice command. For tall or hard-to-reach windows above a built-in, it's often the only practical option. The trade-offs to weigh honestly: motorized blinds cost more than manual, they need either a rechargeable battery (re-charge every several months) or a power source nearby, and a battery motor is a small thing to remember to top up. For most media rooms the convenience is worth it; for a single low window, a quality manual blackout blind is perfectly fine.
Insulation, acoustics, and keeping the room livable
A media room isn't only used in the dark. You want it to function as a normal bonus room, office, or den the rest of the time — which is why "just paint the windows black" is a bad idea. Honeycomb (cellular) shades are a strong fit here because the same air-pocket structure that insulates also softens echo slightly and gives you a clean, calm look when raised. Getting the measurement and install right
Everything above depends on a precise fit, and that's genuinely hard to DIY for a blackout system. Side channels have to land flush on the jamb, the headbox depth has to clear the window crank or any trim, and the fabric width has to be cut to overlap the channels — too narrow and you reopen the light gap you were trying to seal. Inside-mount gives the cleanest look but demands a square, deep enough recess; outside-mount (blind and channels mounted on the wall around the opening) seals better on shallow or out-of-square windows and is often the smarter call in a true theatre room, at the cost of a slightly bulkier look.
