Knowing which signs mean "quick fix" and which mean "time for new blinds" saves you from throwing money at a window covering that's already past its useful life. The Clear Signs Your Blinds Need Replacing
If you're seeing more than one of these, repair is unlikely to be worth it:
- Lift mechanism sticks, jams, or won't raise/lower evenly, even after cleaning and adjusting
- Cords or chains are fraying, snapping, or have already broken and been re-tied
- Slats or fabric are visibly warped, bowed, or bent out of shape (common with heat and moisture)
- Fabric or vinyl has yellowed or discoloured unevenly, especially compared to a wall-mounted section that got less sun
- Fabric is faded to a different shade than when installed, or feels brittle and cracks when folded
- Torn, ripped, or sun-rotted fabric that won't hold a crease or fold properly anymore
- A persistent musty smell or mildew spotting that cleaning hasn't removed (common in bathrooms and basements)
- Motorized blinds where the motor no longer responds to remote, app, or wall switch commands
- The style, colour, or slat size clearly no longer matches a renovated room
How Long Do Blinds Actually Last? (By Type)
Lifespan depends heavily on material, sun exposure, and how often the blind is raised and lowered. These are general expectations for well-maintained blinds — south- and west-facing Calgary windows with strong UV exposure tend to land at the shorter end of each range.
- Aluminum/venetian blinds: roughly 5-7 years — slats bend easily and cords wear faster with daily use

Repair or Replace? How to Decide
Before booking a replacement, weigh these factors — sometimes a single part swap solves the problem.
- Cost check: if repair (parts + labour) approaches roughly half the cost of new blinds, replacing is usually the better value
- Age check: if the blind is already near or past its expected lifespan (above), a repair is a short-term patch, not a fix
- Parts availability: white-label and older blinds may not have an exact colour or mechanism match, so a repaired blind can look mismatched
- Safety: frayed or looped cords are a strangulation risk for kids and pets — don't patch these, replace or upgrade to cordless/motorized
- Scope: if only one blind in a multi-window room is failing, replacing just that one can leave a visible mismatch — sometimes it's worth replacing the set
- Performance: honeycomb shades that have lost their insulating pleat shape, or blackout fabric that no longer blocks light evenly, aren't doing their job anymore even if they still "work"
What Usually Is Repairable (Not a Full Replacement)
Not every issue means starting over. These common problems are typically fixable without replacing the whole blind:
- A single broken cord, lift string, or tilt wand disconnect
- One damaged or bent slat that can be swapped individually
- A loose or misaligned mounting bracket
- A valance that's come unclipped or crooked
