Blinds Care & Warranty FAQ: Cleaning, Fading, Damage & Moving
Custom blinds are a long-term investment, so it's worth knowing what basic care looks like and what your warranty actually protects. Below are quick, honest answers to the everyday care and warranty questions we hear most from Calgary homeowners — cleaning schedules, sun fade, accidental damage, and moving blinds between windows or homes. How Often Should You Clean Your Blinds?
Cleaning frequency depends on the material and the room. Regular light dusting prevents buildup and keeps mechanisms (chains, cords, motors) moving smoothly.
- Roller, zebra, and roman shades: dust every 2-4 weeks with a microfiber duster, static brush, or your vacuum's soft-brush attachment
- Faux wood, venetian, and aluminum slats: wipe monthly with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth — avoid soaking wood-look slats
- Honeycomb/cellular shades: use compressed air or a hairdryer on the cool setting to lift dust from the pleats without crushing them
- Kitchens and bathrooms: bump up to a quick weekly wipe, since grease and steam build up faster than in other rooms
- Motorized blinds: clean the fabric as usual, but only ever wipe the motor housing with a dry cloth — never spray cleaner near the electronics
Are Blinds Covered for Sun Fading?
Some gradual colour change from UV exposure is normal for any window covering and is generally not treated as a warranty defect — it's expected wear, not a manufacturing fault. South- and west-facing windows in Calgary see the most fading due to stronger, longer sun exposure. Dim-out and blackout fabrics resist fading better than lightweight sheers, and darker colours can show fade lines more visibly than neutrals. If UV exposure is a concern for a specific room, mention it during your in-home consultation so we can recommend a more fade-resistant fabric option.
What Happens If a Blind Is Accidentally Damaged?
A snapped lift cord, cracked slat, or a bracket pulled loose by kids, pets, or moving furniture counts as accidental damage — this is typically not covered under standard warranty, which applies to manufacturing defects and mechanical failure, not everyday mishaps. The good news: most components (individual slats, cords, chains, brackets) can usually be ordered and swapped as replacement parts rather than replacing the entire blind. Can Blinds Be Moved or Reinstalled in a New Window or Home?
Custom blinds are built to the exact width and height of the original window opening, so they can't simply be trimmed to fit a different-sized window. If a new window is the identical size (common in matching condo units or rental buildings), the same blind can sometimes be reinstalled as-is. When moving house, the mounting brackets usually stay behind since they're fixed to the old window frame — the blind itself can travel with you, but it will only fit a new opening that matches the original dimensions. What's Typically Covered vs. Not Covered Under Warranty?
Warranty terms vary slightly by product line, and we walk through the specific document for your chosen product at quote time, but the general pattern looks like this:
- Usually covered: mechanical failure of the lift system (chain, cordless mechanism, or motor), fabric or material defects present at the time of installation, and workmanship issues from the original install
- Usually not covered: accidental damage, misuse or unauthorized modification, normal sun fading and colour change over time, and water damage on products not rated for high-moisture rooms
